Just a quick post here. Anna and I woke up in Madaba, site of some remarkable mosaics that we didn’t see. We’re told they’re great, though. We just kind of ran out of time and decided to walk around town at random rather than seeking out tourist destinations. And then it was back to Amman for the flight to Sharm El-Shiekh, where we were picked up by a Bedouin driver to head out to Sinai, where we’d meet Lars and Luke.
The short version of the story is that it was about a 200 kilometer drive from the Sharm El-Shiekh to where we turned off the road and headed out into the Sinai desert. That was a 60km drive across increasingly desolate and beautiful landscapes, much of it off road and bouncy in the vintage Land Rover. Even still, we saw the occasional small village, school, or mosque. Tomorrow we’re off for several miles of hiking in the desert, with camels to carry packs and stuff.
We’ll post tons of pictures later, but for now I’m typing this out before dinner and unsure of how well the satellite phone will work. But that picture to the left… that’s what we’re seeing right this very moment. It’s pretty incredible.
